The Leaderboard Is Live: Who Really Cracks Fastest?

Crack the Vault now has public leaderboards. Only your first crack of each vault counts, a clean run beats a fast sloppy one, and answers typed too fast stay off the board.

Yesterday we gave you challenge links, so you could settle things with one friend at a time. Today we're settling it with everyone.

Crack the Vault now has a public leaderboard. Six safecrackers were on it within minutes of it going up, and one of them, Jarvis, has already cracked all ten vaults. The rest of you have some catching up to do.

Two boards

Top safecrackers ranks players across the whole game. It counts how many vaults you've cracked first. If two people are level, more Ghost ranks wins. If that's level too, the lower total time wins.

Fastest per vault lets you pick any of the ten safes and see who cracked it best. Rank comes before time here. A Ghost run, with no lives lost and no hints, beats a Professional run even if the Professional was a few seconds quicker. We think a clean crack should beat a lucky scramble.

Your own row is highlighted. If you're further down than the top 20, a line underneath tells you where you stand, like "You: #37 of 120".

Only your first crack counts

Every vault has a pool of questions, and if you replay a vault enough times, you'll start to remember them. That's fine for practice. It isn't fine for a leaderboard.

So the boards only look at the first time you crack each vault. Replays still improve the best time on your own vault map, but they never change your place on the board. Your first attempt is the one that matters, so make it a good one.

Challenge runs don't count either. When a friend sends you a link, they already know the answers, so those runs stay off the boards completely.

The 3-second rule

Reading a riddle, thinking and typing an answer takes a real person more than a few seconds. So if any lock in a run is answered within 3 seconds of appearing, that run gets flagged.

A flagged run still cracks the vault. You keep your progress and move on to the next safe. It just doesn't get a time or a place on the boards, and on the overall board it counts as at least the vault's full time limit, so it can never help you.

The clock is kept on our server, not in your browser, so there's no editing your time on your own phone.

Where you'll see your place

  • On the leaderboard page, from the Leaderboard link at the top of the site or in the footer on phones.
  • On the home page, which now shows the top five safecrackers.
  • On your vault map, as "You're #3 of 5", with "#1 fastest" on each vault you've cracked.
  • Right after a first crack, the cracked screen tells you where you landed, like "#3 on The Pawnbroker's Box".

Playing as a guest?

You can see every board without an account, but guests aren't on them. Boards need a name, and names come with an account.

When you crack a vault as a guest, the game still tells you how you did: "Your 0:22 would be #1. Save your progress to claim your spot." Save your progress, pick a username, and the spot is yours. Your earlier cracks come with you.

How to get on the board

  1. Start with Vault 1. No sign-up needed.
  2. Save your progress and pick a username.
  3. Take your time on your first crack. Clean beats quick.

If you signed up before usernames existed, you were given a random one. You can change it once, right now, from your Account page.

What's next

More vaults are coming, and with them, more boards to top. In the meantime, have a look at who's on top, then send the leaderboard to the friend who's sure they'd beat everyone on it.
